Santo Amaro's Tale | |
The small statue of Santo Amaro was found near
the seaside, in Baixa Rasa, in a place called the wind spot, probably it
came from a shipwreck. It is said that this happened more than 300 years
ago. Not only the seaside was named the seaside of Santo Amaro but also
all the fields around it.
The saint was taken to the church, and no matter how hard people tried, everyday the image kept appearing on the rock where it had been found. No matter where people tried to lock Santo Amaro's image, it always disappeared, and it always ended up in the place where it had been found. In the presence of such perplexing event, the people gave up and decided to build a chapel on that location, naming it Santo Amaro. There are those who still remember the appearance of a fountain, which provided the water need to make clay to build the chapel. Today the fountain is known as Santo Amaro's Fountain. Every year, people still celebrate the famous evasions of the statue, on the first Sunday of September. |
